Flanagan-Cushing Family Tree, Part I

NOTE: My brother, Tom Reagan, and his wife, Lisa Konopka Reagan, had a very detailed family tree done last year and shared it among the family. Jim Kellner, Lisa's uncle, did the research and writing.

The images cannot be copied from the pdf document, though, so I have left out copies of census forms and photographs. I will post information from other branches of the tree in the future.

I have made a couple notes in the text, but all of the credit belongs to Jim.

"Generation 4" refers to my grandmother and her siblings.

A descendent states on Ancestry.com that Arthur was in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but to date no documentation has been found.
  1. Sarah Cushing was born 19 Nov 1873 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
  2. John William Cushing was born before 13 Jun 1875 in Indian River, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He died on 25 Apr 1950 in Rockland, Maine.

While generally speaking a great resource, Ancestry.com has its limitations. There are many family stories that are noted as fact, but have no real documentation to back them up. Arthur’s time in the RCMP is one example, another is the story of William Gray Cushing falling in love with the family’s Irish maid and moving to Canada after being disowned by the family. There is no indication that Mary Breen was ever in Massachusetts and the census reports do not indicate the Cushing family ever had any servants. There is documentation of continued contact with his family. There is in fact a lot of interesting information about William Gray Cushing Jr. A 200 page pension application paints a somewhat less romantic, but nonetheless interesting picture of one man whose life story opens the door to a rich New England legacy.
In the following pages many branches of the Reagan/Roper Family tree fade into obscurity as fewer and fewer details emerge. The Reagans, the Ropers, the Donahues, the Quincannons, the McNamaras, and the Flanagans are lost to history although there is an excellent chance of finding undocumented details claiming otherwise. The Cushing Family however all but comes alive with several sources including the pension application noted above, and Census and other records found on Ancestry and other sites. The three most thorough texts were written in the early 1900’s and document families from Hingham Massachusetts including its most famous ancestor: the 16th President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln.

William Gray Cushing Jr...in his own words...

Mr. Baker Dear Sir
I receaved your letter to night and a paper from the pension office for me to prove that I am William G Cushing alias Henry Wilson that I served in the Gemsbok and Niphon and also how I received my injuries when and where Note Mr Baker I would not take a falce oath for all the pensions ever granted by our government and every word I put in this letter I have to swaire to its truthfulness.

William Gray Cushing enlisted in the Navy in 1861. He received his first injury when a sailor who was practicing maneuvers on deck stabbed him in the eye. He eventually lost his sight in that eye. He was discharged in 1862...

...was at home as near as I can remember 11 months got into trubble with girl name Sarah Frances Nelson. Heard they were after me to marry the girl. I went to Boston and Shipt under the name of Henry Wilson

Sarah Frances Nelson was born to William and Mary (French) Nelson on 3 Sep 1845 in Hingham MA. She married Joseph Edwin Stoddard in Hingham on 25 Jul 1860. Together they had 7 children. She died in Brockton Massachusetts on 18 Mar 1902.
No additional details of the Nelson-Cushing scandal have been found.

In the course of his second enlistment from 1863 to 1866 He served aboard several different ships: the Ohio, the Niphon, the Paul Jones, & the North Carolina. While on the Niphon he
“fell or stept into an uncovered coal bunker” and fractured his leg just below the hip. The injury which left him with a limp, left him fully disabled within a few years.

I left home in 1870 on account of my injuries as I could not work at my traid and went in to Fishing on P.E.I. and I never knew until some four years ago when mother wrote to tell me from Hingham Mass that she was getting a pension as a war widow for me to apply as she knew of my injuries.

On 6 August 1871 He married Mary Ann Breen

Eventually his injuries left him unable to work at all and his military pension was his sole income.

This letter from the Consular Agent of the United States to the Pension Officer documents 21 November 1903 death of William Cushing. It goes on to state the widow’s dire straits and appears to begin the process of finding her aid.

When Mary Ann (Breen) applied for a Widow’s Pension the most pressing question of eligibility appears to have gone back to William’s alias and “Miss Sarah Frances Nelson”. While no documentation was found to support the possibility of Sarah filing a claim; the Pension Office demanded proof that Marry Ann Breen was William’s one and only wife.

Affidavits from William’s brother Webster Cushing, and sister Leona (Cushing) Nash;; and Mary’s brother James Breen and others swear that Mary Ann Breen was William’s first and only wife.

      1880 Census Rockland Maine
There are a number of McNamaras found in the Rockland/Thomaston area and while some of the documentation is elusive it is likely they are all part of the same clan. Best guess would be that John and Timothy are brothers, along with Anthony whose family appears on the previous page of the census. Ellen, listed as a daughter of Timothy is more likely his daughter-in-law, John’s wife.
William is another son of Timothy
Anthony’s death certificae lists his mother as Catherine Scanlon, but maiden name may be
      Stanwood or Scanlon.

David Cushing Sr. served as a Cornet in a Military group sent to provide relief to the British ousted from Fort William Henry in 1757. Fort William Henry was a British fort best known as the site of notorious atrocities committed by Indians against those surrendered British and provincial troops following that French siege in 1757. That event is the focus of James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans

A person's ancestry forms a binary tree. Each person has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, sixteen great-great grandparents, etc. The number of individuals in this tree grows exponentially and will eventually become impossibly high. This paradox is explained by shared ancestors. Instead of consisting of all unique individuals, a single individual may occupy multiple places in the tree. This typically happens when the parents of an ancestor are cousins. This reduction in the number of ancestors is called pedigree collapse. David and Ruth were second cousins as two of their grandfathers were brothers BUT two of their grandmothers were sisters as well, resulting in their each having twelve unique great grandparents rather than sixteen. While multiple marriages between families have come to have a negative connotation it is a practice that continues today in many cultures. It was commonplace in colonial America and many examples are found in this tree.

NOTE: Another term for cousins marrying is "inbreeding."
